Decorating, coloring and hiding eggs goes back to the middle ages. The Egg Hunt is a fun activity for kids, usually held the day before Easter, or on Easter morning.

Here are some user submitted ideas on how to host your own Egg Hunt!

Easter Hunts and Games
Tangled Trails
This is a good game for nearly any age. Start with a skein of yarn using a different color for each child. Tie one end to their Easter basket or prize then pull out the yarn and wrap it around chairs, table legs, behind furniture, etc. all around the house creating a trail the child must follow. Don't forget to loop it around other trails of yarn. Each color should be around each of every other color at least once. You can make the younger child's trail easier and the older child's as difficult as is appropriate for the age. Bring the ends back to a central starting point and when you say go, each child must roll their yarn up on a flat piece of cardboard or into a ball as they go, following the trail and untangling the yarn from their siblings trails.
This can be adapted to any holiday using pumpkins for Halloween or Christmas presents, etc. or even treat bags for birthdays. Make it as long or short as space permits. I added rules that the child could not let go of the yarn so if the yarn was looped around a table leg, the child had to go around the table leg too. Again, if it was looped around someone else's, they had to climb over or under to untangle it. This also works great outdoors if you have a lot of trees and shrubs, playground equipment and outdoor furniture. The prize should be hidden from sight. You can add extra prizes for the kids to choose from as they find their baskets.( First one gets first pick.) Have fun and don't forget the video camera.
Thanks go Annette for this great idea!!

Easter Drawing Game
Give all children a sheet of paper, and a dark crayon. Tell them to place the paper on their head and draw a bunny, or decorated egg, etc. They have to draw the object while the paper is on their head. The kids will be surprised to see how there drawings look! Most of them do not look like the object they were told to draw ! The one that draws the best is the winner.
Thanks go Phyllis for this super idea!!

Hunt Fair!
Since we have children ranging in ages 2 - 17, I wanted to make our Easter Egg hunts more fair. First, we assign each child a number (usually 1 being the youngest). I take an equal number of plastic eggs, bags of peanuts, fruit roll ups, packages of crackers, etc. for each child and mark their number on the eggs or packages. The adults hide them and then the children are allowed to ONLY find their own number (they aren't supposed to alert the others when they find someone else's eggs, but of course they do). This makes for a more challenging and fun egg hunt. This has become a family tradition.
Thanks go Susan for this nice family idea!!

Family Fun
We always have quite a crowd for Easter, usually 15 to 25. First we have an early dinner, with everyone bringing food that pertains to Easter day. We use paper plates, and I put numbers on the bottom (underside), from 1 to however many people there are. When everybody is seated, I draw a number, and whoever has it wins. You can also do this by drawing pictures on the bottoms of the plates, (egg, bunny, etc.) You can also number napkins or paper cups.
Since our kids have gotten older, we do our hunt a little different now. We ask EACH person to bring a bag of their favorite candy. We split each bag into 2 equal piles. (The leftovers go in my candy dish) Then we puteveryones name into a hat and pick them out to make 2 teams. The first person drawn is captain for team 1, the second person drawn is captain for team 2. The 3rd person is on team 1, the 4th person is on team 2, etc. until everyone is on a team.
Team 1 hides their pile of candy (we have plastic eggs & hard boiled too), then team 2 hunts for it. Then team 2 hides stuff, and team 1 hunts. We also have 1 'special' egg for each team, and whoever finds that, gets a nice prize (movie tickets, etc.). We have been doing this hunt for 15 years, and no one has gotten tired of it yet. We have from age 10 to 75, everyone enjoys it! It also helps that we have a rather large back yard.
You can also have a contest to see which family can bring the most creative Easter dessert. This means less cooking for you, too!!
Egg/spoon Race:...instead of just walking a straight line with your egg on your spoon..we make an obstacle course for everyone to follow. You can either do teams OR you can time everyone individually (best time wins, of course). Guessing Game: Fill a medium sized jar with jelly beans (or assorted Easter candy), then have everyone write down on a piece of paper, their name & how many candies they think are in the jar. The person closest wins the jar of candy.
