Shrove Tuesday

Definition: The day before Lent begins. For many ethnic groups, Lent was traditionally a time to give up not only meat but also fats and dairy products, especially eggs. To use up the foods before Lent began many Italians cooked eggs. British and Canadians follow an old custom of making pancakes.

The Polish celebrate with doughnuts called paczki. The Portuguese make a pastry called Filhos malassadas. Germans make Fastnacht Kuchen.
