Kids Turn Music

Pop/rock duo MICHAEL & MARISA, 12 and 13 respectively, will lend their support to the Pacer Center s National Center for Bullying Prevention both financially and through promotion of their self-penned anti-bullying song The Same . MICHAEL & MARISA will donate funds to the National Center for Bullying Prevention through money they earned through touring.

It s inspiring to see children wanting to help other children, says Julie Hertzog, director of Pacer s National Center for Bullying Prevention. We thank Michael & Marisa for their commitment to help peers who are bullied, and believe their example will lead the way for others to get involved and make a difference in their community.

The Same , found on the four-song EP It s Like That , due for a late 2010 release, tackles the subject of bullying head-on from a pair who ve witnessed peers being picked on. The song was written by the Boston-based siblings after reading about the January 2010 suicide of 15 year-old Phoebe Prince, following an onslaught of bullying behavior by schoolmates at a Massachusetts high school. Michael, 12, states, We really wanted to write and record this song as a wake-up call to kids around us. We wrote this song earlier this year, after we heard about the suicide of Phoebe Prince, who was only 15. It affected us so much that we wanted to tell other kids about it, to stop something like that from happening again. And that s how we express our feelings best, through our music.

Marisa, 13, adds, It s important that, as kids ourselves, we stand up and defend our friends. We have the greatest power, and the biggest responsibility, to come together as a group and let bullies know it s not okay to treat others this way. We have the strength to make a positive change to make the world a better place. MICHAEL & MARISA recently uploaded a special message and acoustic performance of The Same , which can be viewed here:

MICHAEL & MARISA are also receiving encouragement for their efforts from the Build-A-Bear Workshop®online tween destination, Build-A-Bearville®. Keeping kids safe online and helping to prevent online bullying is an ongoing priority in Build-A-Bearville. MICHAEL & MARISA s anti-bullying song, The Same , has been playing in the online site and will continue to play throughout Internet Safety Month this October.
