THE STUNNERS Allie –Hayley – Kelsey – Marisol – Tinashe
Individuality… Personality... Positivity... Three words that describe The Stunners, five Los Angeles singers and performers that are as different as night and day, but have been brought together by a common bond: Their love of music.
“Even the biggest differences between people can be overcome by music, it’s the universal language,” says Hayley. And she would know. The girls in The Stunners - Allie, Hayley, Kelsey, Marisol and Tinashe – don’t have to remember the trials and tribulations of their teenage years, because they’re still in the midst of them.
They know what it’s like to struggle with their own identity in a society that uses sex as a marketing tool, and they don’t subscribe to Hollywood’s tabloid perception of pop culture.
“Girls and women need to know that with confidence, anyone can be sexy or admirable just being themselves,” says Allie. “There’s no excuse for trying to be someone you’re not, jealousy and cattiness, because everyone has something about them that makes them interesting.”
In the case of The Stunners, there are several “somethings,” starting with their blissful pop sound, an explosion of aggressive grooves, lush vocal harmonies, infectious electronic beats and a pretty-in-pink attitude. It’s pop splendor in its sweetest form, a timeless crash of free-spirited fun, sultry energy and vibrant melodies.
The music is every bit as fun and unique as the girls who sing it.
Allie is the band’s fashionista, a Texas native who plays the violin and loves the down-home nature of the Dixie Chicks just as much as the glitz and glamour of the club scene... Haley is the indie-rock hipster, who drums and plays guitar and enjoys avant-garde acts like Arcade Fire as much as dancing to hip-hop... Kelsey is the girl next door, a sweetheart from Tennessee who finds equal pleasure in Audrey Hepburn, classic novels like “Wuthering Heights” and “War and Peace” and the music of Kings of Leon… Marisol was born in Mexico and is the group’s street-wise and flirtatious fly girl… And Tinashe is a born star, her big voice and bold dance moves making her a real show stopper.
“My musical influences come from Pepe Aguilar and Rocio Durcal, two very famous Hispanic singers,” says Marisol. “I always wanted to sing ‘Amor Eterno’ by Rocio Durcal, but I can’t because I always have tears pouring out of my eyes as soon as I start to hear it!”
While Tinashe may not share Marisol’s Latina heritage, she does share an appreciation for the way that music makes her feel, and that’s what bonds the girls together. “Music is my love, my therapy and my obsession,” says Tinashe. “My life legitimately revolves around singing and dancing! One thing I am absolutely, positively sure of is that I am going to be a star – not so that I can live a life of indulgence, but so that I can inspire people and touch people on a grander scale.”
“I want people to look at us and see how five completely different girls from five completely different worlds can come together and make something amazing,” adds Kelsey. “I hope that people will see us as an example and as encouragement to live outside of their box and experience something more in life.”
For The Stunners, that “something more” is the exhilarating rush that happens when you take five separate backgrounds and bring them together. The girls’ musical tastes are as diverse as diverse can be, from Coldplay to Christina Aguilera , Muse to Michael Jackson, Beyonce to Bach, and Lil Wayne to John Mayer. Their sound is the ultimate expression of all those influences, and more.
The Stunners were discovered in 2007, each bringing their own “stunning” dynamic to the group. Individually, they’ve been seen on TVs Two and a Half Men, CSI, Everyone Hates Chris and Suite Life: On Deck, as well as the upcoming Cartoon Network live action movie Scooby Doo: In The Beginning. Together, they have a television show in the works that will capture the personality of their day-to-day lives and the sense of humor that they embrace.
Forget the cattiness of typical teen television dramas. The Stunners are all about breaking down stereotypes, not reinforcing them.
